Advanced Search Tool:  What is the Twitter Advanced Search Tool? On Twitter, you might be looking for trending content that you would like to retweet or trying to determine the best hashtags to accompany your tweets. That's where the Twitter Advanced Search Tool comes in handy. With the Advanced Search Tool, you can locate specific tweets based on certain keywords, hashtags, dates, people and places. It also allows you to search for your website URL to see if others are mentioning your page, so you can monitor your social media results.

How do I use the Advanced Search Tool? Using the Twitter Advanced Search Tool is quick and easy: 

  • Enter your search into the Search bar on
  • Go to the Search Filters box (see graphic) on the upper left side of the page and select "Show." Then, tap on "Advanced Search."
  • Refine your search by completing the field options (i.e., keyword, phrase, hashtag, etc.).
  • Tap on "Search" to see your results.
  • You can even "Save this Search" for the future to save a specific search that yields good results.

Shortcuts:  Are there other quick Twitter shortcuts? Absolutely!

  • Did you know if you put parentheses around a Twitter handle you can find everyone who has tweeted that handle previously?
  • Or, you can type "n" to quickly compose a new tweet on Twitter?
  • If you type "?," the complete list of Twitter keyboard shortcuts will pop up.

Forbes5 listed two tricks that are particularly helpful on YouTube: the "Watch Later" option and "Videos with Captions" function.

Watch Later Option: How can I watch YouTube videos later? Let's say you are managing your YouTube channel and a customer walks in to discuss his HVAC installation. There's a video you want to watch, but you need to postpone it so you can assist the customer. That's where the "Watch Later" option on YouTube can be useful. Here's how to use it:

  • Click on the Clock Icon that appears on the video thumbnail or the "Add To" Icon under the video on the watch page.
  • Then select the "Watch Later" option.
  • Later, access your "Watch Later" playlist and view the video.

Videos with Captions Function: How can I use the "Videos with Captions" function on YouTube? According to a new survey from the Pew Research Center, 67% of Americans report that they get at least some of their news via social media.6 YouTube is one of the higher-ranking social media platforms that viewers turn to as a news source. It is also the second-largest search engine.7

Many people prefer closed captioning for their news programming and other videos. Here's how to activate the captions on YouTube: 

  • Click on the CC (Closed Captioning) Icon that appears on the video thumbnail to turn the captions on or off.
  • Select the Gear (Settings) Icon.
  • Choose "Subtitles/CC" on the drop-down menu and then "Options" to change the font, font size and/or color of your captions.

And, if you would like to edit the captions for your videos, that's easy to do as well: 

  • Go to Creator Studio and your Video Manager.
  • Select the video you would like to edit the captions for and tap on Down Arrow next to the Edit Button.
  • Click on the "Add New Subtitles or CC" button.
  • Select English as your language.
  • Select Edit.
  • Make your edits to the video captions.
  • Select "Publish Edits" when your edits are complete.

Now you know a few simple tips and tricks that can save considerable time and effort on your social media marketing efforts. Utilize these social media shortcuts to become a pro on Twitter and YouTube.
